This is long overdue but the recent events have finally caused some action that has been requested behind the scenes for years. Many of us air traffic controllers have expressed these concerns to various managers and supervisors over the years to no avail. Finally action is being taken but the fault lies in MANAGEMENT and not the CONTROLLERS:
Those "QUICK TURN" shifts are INSANITY! And taking some short naps on breaks is encouraged at many of the larger facilites. For the most part the smaller towers such as Reno and Knoxville are where these problems are the greatest. DCA set themselves up for a fall (I used to work there) by having only one person in the tower. That's insane! Truth is we have all been tired on those overnight shifts and to decrease staffing for "cost" compromises public safety which is completely unacceptable.
This has happened so many times but has just recently surfaced. I'm happy to see this is finally being addressed.
